Introduction

In a remarkable initiative aimed at fostering the well-being of a critical but often overlooked segment of our community, ASA Nwura, a leading waste management company, has undertaken the noble task of enrolling informal waste pickers in Takoradi on health insurance. This laudable project, supported by Smile Pool, not only extends a compassionate hand to those tirelessly contributing to waste recovery but also paves the way for a healthier, more resilient workforce.

In a show of commitment to the welfare of waste pickers, ASA Nwura has enrolled a total of 57 individuals, comprising 48 women and 9 men, in the health insurance scheme. These individuals, often marginalized and at the forefront of waste management, are now poised to enjoy the benefits of quality healthcare. This act of kindness represents a significant step towards recognizing their invaluable contributions to our society.

The success of this initiative is the result of a fruitful collaboration between ASA Nwura and Smile Pool, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting social causes. The Smile Pool Executive Director voiced their strong belief in the importance of this initiative and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting such noble endeavors in the future.

The CEO of ASA Nwura, Mr. Benjamin Agyin Turkson emphasized that providing free access to healthcare is not just an act of kindness but a strategic move to create a vibrant and resilient workforce for waste recovery. In line with this vision, ASA Nwura also provided essential equipment and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the waste pickers. To ensure the safety and well-being of waste pickers, ASA Nwura distributed gloves and protective nose masks as part of the PPEs. Furthermore, they provided equipment designed to make the waste pickers' work more efficient and ergonomic, eliminating the need for them to bend while picking up plastics. This not only enhances their productivity but also minimizes the risk of injuries on the job.
